Welcome

The name Guide Posts references a sign left by an earlier traveler that provides directions for future travelers to help them find their way.

Whether you’re a book lover on a journey to build community or have meaningful conversations with your book club, a teacher wanting to thoughtfully engage your students with films in class, or a tourist looking for help navigating a new place, we’re all just travelers looking for signs to get us where we want to go.

The guides on this site are created to give you a sense of direction and help you on your journey!

FAQs

Why should I listen to you?

I promise I won’t tell you to go or see or talk about or read or watch anything that I haven’t already!

In terms of credentials:

Books: I have a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Tennessee. I’ve spent years in book clubs and making recommendations to library patrons about what they should read next.

Films: Creating film discussion/watch guides began when I was a high school history teacher (2017). My students really enjoyed watching films in class, but I wanted them to add to our class discussion of a topic, not just be fluffy, mindless entertainment. I had a hard time finding resources, so I made my own!

Travel: I travel as often as my PTO and budget will allow, most often traveling solo! I travel on a very modest, but comfortable budget, usually staying in local hotels and making sure I get in a good mix of experiences (museums, adventure activities, concerts/plays, etc.), dining, and shopping (I love a trinket).

Are you affiliated?

I am not formally or contractually affiliated with any company, store, hotel chain, etc. Some of the hotel links in the travel guides are affiliated through booking sites, meaning I get a small payout if you use that link to book your stay at that hotel. Book guides also have links to purchase books in Amazon and/or Bookshop, which are considered affiliated.

What is Bookshop?

Bookshop is a great Amazon alternative that benefits local and independent bookstores. I’ve transitioned to buying books almost exclusively from local bookstores, Bookshop, or Thrift Books (which can be cheaper than Amazon and have rewards programs).
